The only way for Antonio(Prospero's Brother) to become the duke of Milan was to get rid of Prospero and sons if he had any. In the 16th century the kingship or dukedom was rightfully given to the eldest son no matter what, unless he is dead of course.
If anyone knew Prospero did magic they would exile him anyway. Back then wizards were usually bad so they were killed or sent into exile.

It has been twelve years since Miranda and I have landed on this island. Only if my brother did not kick me out of my own dukedom my baby girl would have been raised by the best teachers and by the best women. She would have the nicest clothes and anything she wanted. Because of my brothers jealousy we are here on this island alone, except for the beast that I taught to speak and the way of the king’s men. Caliban is his name and he is the son of Sycorax a witch from Argier who was exiled from her town to this island. That dirty bastard! After all, I taught him, he tries to violate my daughter. “Thou didst prevent me; I had peopled else this isle with Calibans.” for these words I should have killed him, but why kill him when he can fetch wood and start the fire. Oh my servant, my brave spirit who has served me since my landing on this island has done greats deeds for me he has caused a storm on the ship, which carries the people who have made my life miserable and deserted me on this island. He appointed the tempest that I bade him to and my plan will work. He has scared Ferdinand, the son of Alonso who is the king of Naples, enough to make him abandon ship. Little do these men know but I am in control of their fates and could kill them anytime I wanted too. I have had Ariel lead Ferdinand to meet my daughter Miranda and I think this will be my way back into society if I convince them to fall in love and be wedded. if only I can turn my daughter against me just enough to stand up for Ferdinand and to seal their fates. so I will have to use my magic on him. However, one thing that must not come from her mouth is her name and if she does reveal then who knows what will happen. His father knows my name and her name so why wouldn’t he know.
